Community Safety & Security Focus Area

Michigan State University is a land-grant university dedicated to teaching, research and outreach and includes a large on-campus resident population. The challenge is to maintain a balance between a reasonably open and accessible on-campus environment and the need to protect physical access to sensitive information, research information and the safety of property and the safety of people.

In addition, emergency planning in such a large, diverse, decentralized setting that encourages creativity provides challenges. Integrated emergency planning must engage the academic, research operations and support components of the institution.

The Boldness by Design initiative begins to address how to enhance the safety & security and engage the entire campus community in the emergency planning process.
