Among the values that Michigan State University has embraced in implementing Boldness by Design initiatives are quality, inclusiveness, integration and connectivity. Each of these values calls on the individuals who comprise the “Team MSU” family to work toward individual and group excellence to achieve the President's strategic imperatives: Enhance the student experience, Enrich community, economic & family life, Expand international reach, Increase research opportunities, and Strengthen stewardship.

The Vice President of Finance and Operations has developed Boldness By Design initiatives to address three of the strategic imperatives: Strengthen Stewardship, Enhance the Student Experience and Enrich Community, Economic & Family Life.

These imperatives are central to the mission of the Office of Finance and Operations, which manages the day-to-day operational support of the university and maintains the financial stability needed to keep MSU running. The Vice President's approach to realizing these initiatives allows for incremental progress toward specific goals that can be measured regularly for practical, sustainable results.

By utilizing the principle of integration, the Vice President of Finance and Operations has developed a plan with strengths that arise from both its narrower and broader approaches—narrower in that the hierarchy will be limited to a well-defined committee that recognizes the broad reach of the stewardship campaigns and plans, and broader in that each committee will need to address the interrelatedness of the many facets of university operations, many of which have never combined their efforts with another area.

By setting clear, measurable goals, the Vice President's Boldness by Design initiatives will facilitate an operations structure that utilizes fully the strengths and talent of the university workforce to the benefit of all truly a bold operations design. This boldness will not only improve the general functioning of the campus but enhance communication and processes on every level that the effect on learning, scholarship, and teaching will gain momentum — in measurable ways.
